‘It is so
difficult to define single influential pieces of work within the great expanse
of modern art, as art is constantly evolving, as each movement it goes through
inspires the next, linking each new idea to a past artist, movement or
concept. Some artists take inspiration
from past movements, taking their basic themes and building on them with their
own ideas, expressionism for example, and some chose to deconstruct previous
artistic conventions, reacting against a past idea, embodied in movements such
as Cubism and Dadism. I believe one of
the most important functions of art is to connect with people and to make an
impression, changing the way we see things, or the nature of art. Therefore, I think the most influential pieces
are ones which achieve this, and still remain emotionally accessible and
understandable in our contemporary society.
This is seen in Munch’s The Scream, in it’s terrifying anxiety about the
nature of existence, or in Dali’s exploration of our collective subconscious mind
in The Persistence of Memory. I believe
each of the paintings in this essay have contributed hugely to how we see the world,
art or at the very least remain socially or emotionally relevant today. There are of course numerous artists and
pieces of work which I believe have had equal impact on the art world, yet I
have been unable to include in this essay.
Therefore, it is a representation of pieces of work that I really
believe have made a change, or have resulted in the production of other influential
paintings. ‘
